Information Security: How Bad Is It?

How can you mitigate your risk of becoming a victim of spear phishing victim? This Infographic from Firmex outlines what steps you should be taking.

Earlier this year, several banks’ websites became victims of cyber attacks. Hackers were able to launch denial-of-service attacks using a bank employee’s privileged login details. The employee’s information was used to access a master payment switch for issuing wire transfers. With just the flick of a switch, the hackers were able to wire funds into accounts they controlled on a mass scale.

In Fall of 2012, the FBI issued a warning to banks, informing them that criminals were specifically targeting bank employees with spear phishing attacks. Since then, hackers have adjusted their strategy and started to target employees who are once or twice removed from the targeted websites.

In May, Firmex released an infographic on spear phishing, outlining the advanced tactics hackers are using to gain access to secure information. We explored where the attacks were coming from, and the industries most affected. But how can you prevent yourself from becoming a victim of spear phishing?

Hackers are deploying some of the most sophisticated attacks ever seen. However, with a few simple changes to the business process, you can ensure that your confidential information is only seen by intended recipients. Not using email as a secure document sharing solution, and educating employees on information security, are both good steps in the right direction.

As a cloud-based virtual data room provider used to securely share confidential documents, Firmex takes a great interest in understanding online security, and sharing our knowledge. In our latest Infographic we examine how to prevent spear phishing and cyber attacks.
